Gaia Farm Manager, Brevard, NC

The Gaia Farm Manager oversees the entire greenhouse and Brevard farm operation managing 350 acres of organic medicinal herb production as well as the company’s fruit and vegetable CSA production.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Obtain the required annual requisition for Gaia farm crops from purchasing and develop the annual farm budget
• Develop the annual organic greenhouse plan, organic farm crop plan, organic fertility plan, and organic crop amendments and applications plan.
• Oversee the annual organic fam inspection insuring all farm records are kept in order.
• Manage the implementation of overall plan and vision for the Gaia farms and greenhouses
• Develop weekly fam planner for farm crew to execute
• Conduct seed germination trials for all seed prior to the start of greenhouse planting
• Ensure soil preparation is carried out according to farm standards – breaking down of cover crops, leveling of fields, and bed preparation
• Oversee all daily farm activities, including clearly and thoroughly delegating daily farm activities
• Implement and manage greenhouse, plant propagation and irrigation systems according to the organic farm crop plan
• Address greenhouse pathogens at initial stage to prevent damage to seedlings
• Manage all hardening off of greenhouse crops thru the thru the transplant stage
• Ensure all crops are transplanted into fields in appropriate time and field location
• Execute appropriate crop rotations, cover cropping, soil fertility management and composting programs
• Ensure all crops receive timely irrigation, fertilization and applications for pest management
• Report all daily field applications to Global Sourcing assistant for appropriate record keeping
• Ensure all crops are properly maintained throughout the growing cycle
• Responsible for all aspects of harvest, drying, processing and packing of farm crops
• Maintain cost saving methods in all applications of the farm operation
• Update Purchasing at least once per month during growing season to adjust Farm Plan quantities as needed
• Ensure seeds are harvested when viable and maintain seed inventory
• Ensure all farm equipment is properly maintained and is compliant with organic farm program

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position oversees and directly manages the Farm Crew Manager, and the acting field manager and oversees the work of the entire farm crew

Use written documents to communicate the weekly farm plan to field manager

Education and/or Experience
• Applicant must have experience with large-scale organic field production
• Spanish speaking
• Experience with medicinal herb production

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Strong knowledge of organic/sustainable agriculture practices
• Ability to manage and lead farm crew
• Possess organizational, team building, and leadership skills
• An understanding of safe operation and skill with basic farm tools
• Basic knowledge of record-keeping and financial aspects of agriculture
• Tractor operation skills including but not limited to: disking, plowing, tilling, cultivating, bucket work
• Ability to communicate mechanical issues with mechanic
• Ability to work independently and be comfortable working long, non-traditional hours, particularly during peak season, and in all types of weather
• Ability to perform physical activity: lifting (up to 100 lbs. assisted), carrying (50 lbs.)
• Familiarity with Excel, Word, PowerPoint
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
